Local News Story Analysis 4

The next local story that I have looked at is from the Nottingham regional section of the BBC News website and focuses on debris from a meteorite being found in a local resident's garden.

This is an unusual story and did not make the national news. The man from Jacksdale in Nottinghamshire become a local celebrity, featuring on the TV, radio and print news in this area because of the strange nature of the story. What makes the story seem even more regional is the fact that local 'experts' in Nottingham are having to send the fragments of the meteorite down to London for further analysis.

The fact that the story does not contain many news values is one of the reasons that it would be unlikely that the story would make the national news.

Local News Story 4 - Meteorite

This story contains the following news values:

IMMEDIACY - The story is breaking, being reported a few hours after the incident took place.
FAMILIARITY - This is local news, taking place in Jacksdale in Nottinghamshire.
SURPRISE - The story is surprising as events like meteorites do not happen often.
BALANCE - This story is not negative and is used to balance some of the bad news stories that tend to dominate news outlets.
