Local News Story Analysis 3

The third local news story that I have looked at is a crime story (a type of story that is popular/common in both local and national news).

The story, taken from the Devon and Cornwall regional news section, on the BBC News online site, focuses on the murder of a man in Exeter and the arrest of a number of suspects. It is unlikely, even considering the serious nature of the crime, that this incident would have been reported on the news outside of the Devon and Cornwall area. It would, however, have featured prominently in the local news on radio news bulletins, in local newspapers and on local TV news.

Local News Story 3 - Murder Suspects Charged

This story contains the following news values:

IMMEDIACY - Though the murder has already been reported as news, the arrest of the suspects is breaking news.
FAMILIARITY - This story is local news, taking place in Exeter, Devon.
PREDICTABILITY - This is a case that has been running for some time, and it is expected that the suspects will be charged.
CONTINUITY - This is continuing on from the original murder story and the arrest of previous suspects - the story had been defined as news nearly two weeks previously.
CONFLICT - This story involves a man's death, and disagreements over the suspects guilt will occur.
PERSONALISATION - This is a human interest story as it involves the needless death of a 43 year old man.
NEGATIVITY - This is bad news as it involves a serious crime and a fatality.
SCANDAL - This story is likely to create outrage especially as one of the suspects is only 17.
