Local News Story Analysis 5

The final local news story I have looked at took place in Bristol and involves a local man being rescued by police from under a bridge in Bristol harbour.

This story certainly wouldn't make the national news but because it involves a local resident and a number of local police officers being admitted to hospital, it featured prominently on the local news.

This story contains the following news values:

IMMEDIACY - This is breaking news as the incident has just taken place.
FAMILIARITY - This is local news, taking place in the Bristol area.
SURPRISE - People do not often get trapped in the harbour.
PERSONALISATION - This is a human interest story as it involves police officers risking their lives to save a man in distress. Each of the men was treated for hypothermia.
BALANCE - This story has a happy ending, with the man being rescued and recovering.
