The first local news story I have looked at contains many of the elements that I expected to find in local news and reinforces some of the differences between local and national news coverage.
The story focuses on opposition to a proposal to close a public toilet in Bath, and turn it into a wine bar. The story comes from the Somerset page on the BBC News website. It is unlikely that a story regarding turning a public toilet into a wine bar would make the national news at all, and it is likely to only be of interest to people living in the local area.
Local News Story 1 - Bath Public Toilets
This story contains the following news values:
FAMILIARITY - This story is geographically close to us, this is local news taking place in Bath.
SURPRISE - This news is surprising as there was a previous story stating that the public toilets would remain as they are.
CONTINUITY - There was a previous story about the council planning to stop funding the city's public toilets.
CONFLICT - The council's plans have already been opposed by the public and politicians.
PERSONALISATION - This is a human interest story, as it affects the people living in the community.
