The news values that can be found in both local and national news are often quite different. A good example of this is familiarity. Familiarity will occur more in local news than it will in national news (or, at least the concept of familiarity will be more relevant), due to the fact that local news occurs in smaller communities. This means that the news stories featured will be geographically close to the audience, for example the local news story of the public toilet in Bath directly effects the audience who will be reading it as most likely they will live in that area.
Conversely, the national news story featuring Tom Cruise does not contain familiarity, but will have a much wider audience due to the news value of elite people, a news value which is usually not present in local news.
Impact is a news value that is more likely to be found in national news; if a local news contained this news value then it would most likely have made the national news. An example of impact appearing in national news is the fuel prices story, this is because it directly affects everybody.
The news values of negativity, conflict and personalisation appear frequently in both local and national news, for example, stories like the death of a cyclist in Gateshead and the murder of a pensioner (one story local and one national) contain similar values.
I will try to incorporate as many of these news values into my stories as possible. I am thinking of creating a local radio station, or community radio station, that targets a Jewish audience, so when I write my stories I will include news values that would appeal to the Jewish community as an audience. Familiarity and impact, as news values, will be important as the stories will involve people from the Jewish community (and will have taken place close to places that have large Jewish populations).
