The second local news story I have looked at is about the death of a cyclist, who was killed by a bus in Gateshead. It also contains many of the news values that I expected to find in local news stories.
Again, it is unlikely that this kind story would feature in the national news as it involves the death of a member of the public (rather than an elite person) in a specific regional area.
This story contains the following news values:
IMMEDIACY - The story was reported very soon after the incident happened.
FAMILIARITY - This incident happened in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, and will have resonance with people from that specific area of the country.
FREQUENCY - We often hear news stories about road incidents involving the injury or death of cyclists.
IMPACT - This story could cause cyclists to be more vigilant, especially in the dark.
SURPRISE - It is surprising that a bus would not be more aware of its surroundings.
PERSONALISATION - This is a human interest story as it involves the death of an innocent member of the public.
NEGATIVITY - This story is bad news as it involves an avoidable death of a 35 year old man.
